The best life is a God First life

Wow, if only the Apostle Peter knew

On the day of Pentecost, when Peter preached the first gospel sermon, do you wonder why? Why is it that when Peter and the other Apostles (in Acts 2) were asked by the crowd whose hearts had just been pierced by the message of Christ,” Brothers, what do we do?”

Why did Peter NOT answer the crowd’s question with: “Accept Jesus into your heart and recite with me these words in a prayer, and you will be forgiven, you will be saved.”

WOW, if only the Apostle Peter, who was filled with the Holy Spirit, had known what many people claim today. That they could “just” accept Jesus into their hearts and recite a prayer to be saved; however, that’s “NOT” how Peter answered.

Peter never said, “baptism is an outward sign of an inward decision.” In fact, no such prayer is found in God’s Word. INSTEAD, Peter (filled with the Holy Spirit) tells them exactly what God wanted them to do“And Peter said to them, ‘Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” (Acts 2:38 ESV)

None of Peter’s responses indicates that any of God’s instructions were mutually exclusive.

In verse 41, God’s Holy Word says: “So those who received His word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.” (Acts 2:41 ESV)

So, right after they received the message of Christ, they immediately followed the Apostle’s instructions and were immersed in the waters of baptism. They could have set appointments; they could have done so in small groups over weeks, but instead, we find urgency is implied: “So those who received His word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.” (Acts 2:41)

That day, about 3000 souls were added to the Church! (Don’t you know that took a while?)

These scriptures show us that hearing, believing, repenting, and being baptized in the name of Jesus Christ is how we obtain the Holy Spirit.

Who did the adding? Who was being saved? Verse 47 “praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.” (Acts 2:47 ESV)

Please, don’t take my word for it. Take God’s word for it. “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.” (2 Timothy 2:15)

“Knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation.” (2 Peter 1:20)

Comfort in little things by knowing God’s Word

We were gifted with the morning light as it cast these rainbow colors across our tile floor. As I pointed it out to my wife, I thought, how cool! Its presence then sent my mind down a pathway of thoughts to carry.

Like the rainbow in the sky, this simple patch of colors reminded me of God’s promises. That God cannot lie and will always be with those who love Him. How Jesus said: “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.

While sipping my morning coffee, my mind kept highlighting snippets of God’s Word, “God is the God of All Comfort”,the closer we draw to God, the closer God will draw towards us”, “Ask, and it will be given, Seek and you will find, Knock and the door will open”, “Pray without Ceasing!”

It is comforting to remember how much Jesus cares for us and to be reminded to be humble and to cast all our anxieties on Him.

This little patch of light reminded me that Faith includes Trust. “Never give up on doing good.” Lean on Jesus, especially in times of trial when the challenges of life are heavy, and things don’t make any sense.

So much was brought to mind in this little patch of rainbow light.

Jesus has prepared for those who love Him a place with many rooms where tears, death, mourning, crying, and pain will be no more. It gives me peace to remember this world is but a temporary home; our forever home is, as a song states, “Beyond the azure blue.” Scripture tells us, “Do not love the world or the things in the world.” All this world and its desires are passing away, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.

SATAN IS THE EVIL ONE

 – If you feel farther away from God today than you have in the past, the question becomes, WHO MOVED? HINT: it was NOT God.

“Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.” James 4:8 ESV

It stands to reason that the opposite is also true if we move away from God.

“And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper,” Romans 1:28 NASB

– If there is any evil in it, it is not from God

  • Let no one say when he is tempted, ‘I am being tempted by God’; for God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone.” James 1:13 NASB
  • This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is Light, and in Him, there is no darkness at all.” (1 JOHN 1:5 NASB)

– God is Love

  • “The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love.” (1 JOHN 4:8 NASB)

– God is Good

  • “For the Lord is good; His steadfast love endures forever, and His faithfulness to all generations.” PSALMS 100:5 ESV

– All the Time

Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!” ISAIAH 5:20

Sometimes, we are tempted to blame God when our hearts are torn in anguish and pain. We struggle to reason why tragic things happen to good people, innocent children, loved ones, or maybe to ourselves. We might ask, why me? Why us? Why them? We may experience a tragic loss or have other life-altering events we don’t understand. Crime, Cancer, Alzheimer’s, Dementia, Covid, Heart issues, Blood or Breathing issues, accidents, Lyme disease, to name only a few.

We want an explanation, we want to assign blame, but blaming God is misplaced.

As we see from the scriptures above, there is NO evil in God. There is, however, refuge, hope, and prayers answered. There is the possibility of eternal life in heaven for those who choose to become “In Christ” and keep His commandments according to God’s will, NOT our own.

For He makes the sun rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the just and the unjust.” (Matthew 5:45)

Satan is the evil one; take refuge in Jesus. When we move away from Jesus, we are moving closer to Satan; closer to forever tears.

Jesus is our only hope for eternal life, where there are no illnesses, pain, or tears. Where our souls will live with new bodies, and our hopes become reality forever in heaven with pure love.

When the pangs of life seem overwhelming

The pangs of life can seem overwhelming at times, if only for a few minutes. Our hearts may hurt and feel squeezed and empty, leaving us emotionally consumed and gasping for breath.

Our shield of faith may grow heavy in our arms and, during our human weakness, be carelessly lowered, allowing the darts of evil to strike and drift us into the shadows of a bleak despair.

However, even in these darkest of moments, with Christ, we can overcome.

We must reach out!

Reach out in prayer, reach out to our brothers and Sisters in Christ, spend time in God’s word, and meditate on all the countless reasons we trust in the Lord.

Scripture tells us the closer we draw to God, the closer he draws to us. If we keep God First in our lives, we have what we need to overcome even in our weakest moments.

  • Ephesians 6:16 (shield of faith)
  • 1st Peter 5:7 (cast your burden on the Lord)
  • Galatians 6:2 (share with one another)
  • James 4:8 (as we draw closer to God, he draws closer to us)
  • Matthew 11:28-30 (I will give you rest)
  • Matthew 6:33 (Seek First)

God First!

Clarity is found in Jesus.

Doing what’s right is not always the easiest thing to do, but it’s always the best thing to do.

If you’re not sure if something is right or wrong, you have your answer!

Choose wisely, and you avoid regrets.

Foundations of love

As we get to know God, we strengthen the foundation of our very being; as we establish roots in His word, they become intertwined with God’s will for us; they weave through every letter of God’s living Word, absorbing the never-ending water that nourishes our souls, guiding us to life ever after with our creator.

When we study God’s Holy Word with the desire to know God, we will draw closer to God, and God will draw closer to us; the more we understand God’s Love, the more we love and WANT to please God.

It’s all in His Word, so why not make the effort to seek to know God personally?

As scripture puts it, “Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”

Jesus is our pathway and the only way to eternal salvation, the only way to peace that surpasses all understanding. Get to know God, Store up His word in your heart, and you will find yourself striving to glorify God in every action.

“I have stored up your word in my heart,
that I might not sin against you.”

Psalm 119:11

”But seek first His kingdom and righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” (Matthew 6:33)

Eternal Confidence

The main goal of a disciple of Christ is to advocate for Christ, not to go to Heaven.

Why? The true disciple of Christ is someone who, out of love and gratitude, acts to accept the grace of God by following the commandments of Jesus, one who hears the Word, believes, repents, and confesses Christ as our Lord and Savior, then puts on Christ through baptism for the forgiveness of their sins , then lives for Christ, as defined in scripture.

For them, Heaven is a promise!

So, the focus of the baptized believer should be on helping others share in that promise and the confidence it brings: The confidence of eternal salvation by spreading the Gospel of Christ to all the world.

To all who will obey Him, Jesus is the source of eternal life

God and Country

“I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

When we say the Pledge of Allegiance, we promise loyalty and support to each other. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines “Republic” as: “a government in which supreme power resides in a body of citizens entitled to vote and is exercised by elected officers and representatives responsible to them and governing according to the law.” So we, the people of the United States of America, are “the republic,” and the American flag represents our unity of power.

In 1954, the pledge of allegiance was modified one last time, with the most important words of all added: “One Nation under God.” These four words acknowledge our nation as being under God. In other words, God First!

These words demonstrate that the majority of “We the People” recognize our nation’s strength is beholden to God, and we are thankful to God for his incredible blessings. The pledge also states: “indivisible with liberty and justice for all.”
The concept here is that we will not allow ourselves to be divided, and that the power of the people is to be used to pursue liberty and justice for all.

Some believe Christians should abstain from politics and set the example of not voting because they don’t like the choices, and will point out that heaven is the only true Christian nation.

As a Christian, I understand and agree that God should be first in all our lives. And for true Christians, Heaven is our final home.
However, I don’t believe that speaking up for the values and principles of Christianity in our country or against destructive policies in this worldly government somehow, someway, means we have pledged our loyalty to the Country instead of to Christ and His Kingdom, as some want to claim.

To me, such statements encourage silence and apathy, and discourage speaking up and taking a stand for what’s good. When we stand for good, we stand for God and promote the message of Christ, as God is Good. Our example and the words we use, in and out of politics, should encourage others to want to know the reason for the hope that is in us. 1 Peter 3:15

I appreciate that our “Pledge of Allegiance” includes: “One Nation Under God.”

I am both an Advocate for Christ and part of “We The People”; I speak with my vote and voice.

When I speak against evil and against unjust actions, and when I speak for liberty. I am NOT excluding God. I am taking a stand for God and doing my part to ensure that “We, the people,” continue to acknowledge God at the Helm.

I vote for those whose platform, in my opinion, best aligns with God’s Word.

“A Country without God is a Country lost; a Country with God is a Country Blessed.”

My opinion, WRJ

Loving God

No wonder Jesus was sweating blood; I imagine, to Jesus, separation from His Father may have been worse than the betrayal, worse than the beatings, torture, and death He was facing by the ignorant. In John chapter one, we find that Jesus is “The Word”, that He was with God and was God at creation. Jesus knew His purpose, and He knew the suffering that was about to begin.

In preparation, Jesus prayed, “Not mine, but your will, be done!”

At every moment, Christ had the power to say: Enough! Nope, not doing this, but instead, He was steadfast and adhered to His Father’s plan.

Obviously, God’s plan was the only way, through Christ’s sacrificial death, burial, and resurrection, the only way we could be graced with the opportunity to follow Jesus, keep His commands, and in doing so, receive the promise of eternal life with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Woe to those who reject the love of God. (John 3:18-21)

Jesus’s sacrifice demonstrated His immeasurable love for God, doing God’s will, and His love for you, me, and all mankind. Can you fathom the emptiness, loneliness, and pain Christ felt when He cried out, saying, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani,” that is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”

A Hymn says: “I gave, I gave My life for thee, what hast thou giv’n for Me?”

  • Do we give of ourselves to God in gratitude?
  • Do we respect God?enough to remember Christ and do His Will.
  • Do we love Jesus enough to do as He commanded? – setting time aside on the first day of each week to be with the Church and remember Christ, reflect on the cross, partake of the bread and fruit of the vine, which represents the body and blood of Christ that was shed for us that we may obtain forgiveness.
  • Do we look forward to gathering and worshiping with fellow believers as often as possible? Praising God with song, prayers, teaching, and edification of our brothers and sisters in Christ, being lifted by their presence as we study and grow together in our understanding of God’s will and plan for us.
  • Do we take time to try and share the Gospel of Christ with others?

Scripture tells us that baptized believers are those who are “In Christ,” and when we are “In Christ,” God, Christ, and the Holy Spirit work in and through us. Christ told us that if we love Him, we will keep His commandments, and He gives us a new commandment. ‘That we love others as He loved us.’

Do you love the love that surrounds us all in the Lord?

I wonder: when we don’t take time for Christ, when we don’t put God first, when we choose not to be with the Church, would Christ, in a similar way, cry out, “Why oh why have you forsaken me?

A story Change

I caught him stealing; he had broken into our home. I was upset and nervous as I held the gun. Then, he began begging me not to call the police, let him go, insisting he would not come back. We started talking, and he told me the harsh circumstances of his life that led him to this moment of crime. I began telling him about Christ and the forgiveness of sin available to him through Christ, how, if he would repent of his sins, change the direction of his life, and put on Christ in baptism, he could have forgiveness and eternal life in heaven, as well as a better life here on earth.

We sat at the table, opened a Bible, and studied for several hours. He came to understand God’s gift of grace, the Sacrifice of Jesus that offers us eternal life if we will pick up the cross and follow Jesus according to His will, not ours. We also discussed how following Christ does not relieve anyone of accountability for their actions.

During our study, this criminal came to believe in Christ, experienced godly sorrow, and wanted to begin making things right, so he reached into his pocket and handed me the jewelry he had taken. By doing so, he began taking responsibility for his actions and attempted to make things right. He informed me he wanted to be baptized. After hearing the word of God, he repented, confessed Jesus as the Son of God, and we took him to the pool and baptized him for the forgiveness of his sins, immersing him in water in accordance with Scripture.

After baptism, he understood that his decision did not absolve him of the consequences of his actions. His heart had changed; he now wanted to take responsibility and accept accountability, and I applauded his decision. We then called law enforcement.

Because of his sorrow and request that I forgive him; I did so and chose not to press charges. His decision to make things right was admirable, but it would be costly for him, since he had also broken into other homes and entered our country illegally. He knew, in his heart, that he needed also to correct these wrongdoings.

At least now, when he is deported to his country, he takes with him a greater purpose: to spread what he has learned about the message of Christ with others. Maybe he will return to America legally someday. I gave him my study Bible and contact information. I look forward to hearing from him about his efforts to share Christ.

While this story is fictitious, it’s also possible.

Following Christ does not negate accepting responsibility and accountability for one’s actions; it enhances it. If we genuinely love Jesus and righteousness, we will want to do what’s right, even if it means exchanging our loss of earthly freedom for eternal life in heaven.
