Every Moment of Every Day: The Christian Walk Never Logs Off

The Christian’s walk is in every moment of every day, in every action and every word, in every emoji and every click, every comment on every post.

May the love of Christ show through us in everything we say and do, and may our lights shine in the darkness of evil even when temptations arise, so that our path is one others will want to follow as we follow Christ.

“Be imitators of me, just as I also am of Christ.” 1 Corinthians 11:1

“In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 5:16

“for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light… Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. ”One small nuance, not a correction of doctrine: our lights are to shine in every moment, not only “when temptations arise.” Temptation is when the darkness presses hardest, but the walk itself is constant. If you want that even tighter, change one word: Ephesians 5:8, 11

“It’s My Life”? Think Again

What teenager hasn’t made a similar statement? What adult has never said a similar statement? At Church services in our congregation, someone would hand out a list of prisoner prayer requests gathered by those working in prison ministry. Later, as I prayed and read the requests, I noticed a high percentage of requests from prisoners were for loved ones. Many were concerned about how their absence due to incarceration had caused hurt, physical stress, pain, and financial burdens to those who loved them—their parents, wives, children, grandparents, etc.

Behind bars, their concern for loved ones seems heightened and at the forefront of their minds. I don’t know what got these people behind bars, but I do know: OUR ACTIONS AFFECT THOSE WE LOVE, and we should consider this when we start thinking, “It’s my life; I’ll do what I want.”

No matter what time of life we’re in, young or old, we are examples to those around us, and when we make bad choices, those choices can easily create unnecessary burdens on our loved ones. Jesus knew what He was talking about when He commanded us to love others as He loved us. Jesus is the ultimate example for our lives, and when He walked this earth, He lived accordingly.

If we follow the command to “love others as Christ loved us,” then “living our life like we want to” means living with the understanding that what we do affects those we love.

The Bombs Fall on Everyone—Hope Belongs to Those in Christ

I’ve seen films of war where airplanes dropped bomb after bomb after bomb, maiming, destroying, and taking lives. It seems life hits our families or us much the same way now and then, only the bombs are labeled “health”, “financial”, “stress”, “betrayal”, “loss”, etc. These bombs are not precise; they may hit once in a while or come as a barrage, landing on both those close to God and those far away. One minute, life is excellent; then suddenly, it’s a roller coaster (John 16:33).

For those in Christ building a firm foundation (Galatians 3:26-27), there is hope and assurance that these heartaches and concerns will all pass away, as they are not carried into eternity (Revelation 21:4). For those in Christ, there is always a bright future, a light in our bomb shelter of faith, in Christ our Savior (Romans 6:3-4, Romans 13:14).

Those in Christ who keep Jesus’ commandments always have refuge in God’s promises (Psalm 46:1), knowing this world is only a temporary home.(Philippians 3:20-21; 2 Corinthians 5:1)

Whether our troubles are few or continually bombarding our lives, what really matters is Jesus’s promise of eternal life. In heaven, the challenges of this world will be gone forever. So, no matter what, we need to keep God First in our lives, follow Jesus ’ commands, follow the examples we find in God’s Word so that, as we trudge through the mud of life, we can be content in knowing we will eventually walk the streets of gold in new heavenly bodies for eternity. No tears in heaven, no sorrows given. All will be glory in that land.

Scripture tells us how one comes to be ‘in Christ’ and to ‘put on Christ’: we are sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, and as many as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ (Galatians 3:26-27; see also Romans 6:3-4).

“In Christ” is where one finds peace beyond our understanding. (Philippians 4:7)

Not My Will, But Yours: The Key to Unity and Eternal Life

Jesus prayed, “Not my will, but Yours, be done.” This demonstrates the importance of putting God’s will above our own. Doing so is key to eternal life with Jesus and the thread that binds us together as disciples of Christ in peace, harmony, and love.

Doing God’s will, as revealed in God’s Word, is how we achieve unity.

  • Unity with God’s Word is unity with God.
  • Unity with God’s Word is unity with others.

We find unity when we cumulatively do God’s will, when we seek and adhere to God’s Word as our standard.

Unity among believers is not found in doing our will; It is not found in dismissing any of God’s Word as unnecessary or not applicable today. Unity is not found by trying to improve on what God told us to do.

Unity is, however, key to our spiritual growth; it’s a thread that binds us together as disciples of Christ in peace, harmony, and Love.

Unity in Truth is important! Let us therefore seek and obey God’s will as revealed in His Word, that we may walk in true unity.

“If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” Jesus (John 14:15)

“Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth.” 2 Timothy 2:15

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 7:21:

“And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.” 1 John 2:17
